Find Lorain Jail Booking Records Online

A booking record is created at the moment a detained person is officially processed into the jail. It is the first document that records a person's custody.

During the booking process, the following data is generated:

  • Unique booking number
  • Date and time of admission to the facility
  • List of charges filed
  • Name of the agency that made the arrest
  • Basic identification data of the detainee — name, date of birth, gender

Access to booking records in Lorain County can be obtained in several ways. The online roster on the sheriff's website displays basic information about current inmates. If more detailed or archived records are needed, submit a public records request directly to the Sheriff's Office.

According to Section 149.43 of the Ohio Revised Code, records kept by any public office are generally public, except for categories clearly defined by law. This means that most booking records are available for review. Ohio's open government laws further guarantee citizens' right to access government records.

If a person has been transferred to a state facility after sentencing, they can be found through the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction's inmate search system.

Search the Lorain Jail Roster by Last Name or Booking Number

The inmate roster supports two main search methods.

Search by Last Name

Enter the last name in the appropriate field. Optionally add the first name to narrow the results. Some practical tips:

  • Check the spelling — even one letter error can result in no results.
  • If the system supports partial search, try entering only the first few letters of the last name.
  • For common last names, add the first name or check the date of birth in the results to identify the desired person.

Search by Booking Number

The booking number is the most accurate way to find a specific record. It is assigned to each jail admission separately, so even if a person has been detained multiple times, each booking will have its unique number.

What to Do if the Search Yields No Results

  1. Ensure the name is spelled correctly. Try variations (e.g., shortened forms of the name).
  2. The person may have already been released — the roster only shows those in custody at the time of the request.
  3. There may be a delay between the arrest and the appearance of the record in the system. Try the search again later.
  4. Call the jail directly at 440-329-3710 to verify the detainee's status.
  5. To search for court cases related to the detention, contact the Clerk of Courts Legal Division, located on the first floor of the Lorain County Justice Center.

Jail Roster Updates and Search Limitations in Lorain

The Lorain County inmate roster is updated periodically throughout the day, but it does not happen instantly. There may be a delay from the actual booking to the appearance of the record in the online roster, ranging from a few hours to the end of the business day, depending on the facility's workload and time of day.

Main limitations to be aware of:

  • Publication delay. A recently detained person may not yet appear in the roster. If the arrest occurred at night or on a weekend, the record may only appear the next business day.
  • Disappearance of records after release. When an inmate is released — on bail, by court decision, or after serving time — their record is removed from the current roster. The roster is not an archive of all past bookings.
  • Data entry errors. Sometimes a last name may be entered incorrectly, or the data has not yet been verified. This is rare but explains isolated cases where the search yields no results.
  • Current custody only. The roster shows those currently in custody. To obtain historical data on past bookings, an official records request must be submitted to the Sheriff's Office or contact the Lorain County Records Retention Center.

If you need information about a criminal case, not just custody status, use the county records portal, which contains links to the Clerk of Courts, Recorder, and Auditor records. For cases heard at the state level, a search is available through the Ohio Supreme Court.
