Lorain Court System & Jurisdictions
Several courts operate in Lorain County, each handling specific categories of cases. Understanding jurisdiction will help determine where to search for the required docket.
Court of Common Pleas — the main court of general jurisdiction in the county. It is divided into three divisions:
- General Division — serious criminal cases (felonies), civil lawsuits over $15,000, appeals from lower courts
- Domestic Relations Division — divorces, child custody, alimony, protective orders
- Probate Division — inheritance cases, wills, guardianship, name changes, adoptions. For probate inquiries, call Lorain County Probate Court at 440-329-5176
Besides Common Pleas, several municipalities in the county have Municipal Courts:
- Elyria Municipal Court — misdemeanors, traffic violations, small civil claims, and small claims cases within the jurisdiction of the city of Elyria
- Lorain Municipal Court — similar cases for the city of Lorain
- Oberlin Municipal Court and Avon Lake Municipal Court — serve their respective communities
Small claims cases (lawsuits for small amounts) are heard in the respective Municipal Court based on the defendant's residence. Traffic violations (traffic tickets) also go to the Municipal Court of the jurisdiction where they were issued.
Appeals from Common Pleas are submitted to the Ninth District Court of Appeals, whose records are also maintained by the Lorain County Clerk of Courts. State-level decisions can be tracked through the Supreme Court of Ohio.
Lorain Court Calendar & Upcoming Hearings
To find out the schedule of hearings for today, tomorrow, or the current week, start with the online resources of the Clerk of Courts.
- Visit the Clerk of Courts page and use the link to search court records — the system allows you to find a case by number or party name and see scheduled hearing dates.
- For cases in Municipal Courts (Elyria, Lorain, Oberlin, Avon Lake), check the website of the respective municipal court — each publishes its own calendar or docket.
- The Probate Court maintains a separate schedule; call 440-329-5176 to confirm the hearing date.
If you are a party to a case, the case number is the quickest way to find the necessary information. Without it, a search by last name sometimes returns multiple results, especially for common names. Public terminals in the Justice Center also display the current schedule.
How to Get a Copy of a Lorain Court Document
Copies of court documents come in two types: certified (sealed by the court — required for official purposes) and uncertified (regular copies for reference).
Three ways to obtain a copy
- In person. Visit the Legal Division of the Clerk of Courts office on the first floor of the Justice Center. Information and forms are available online in advance. You will need the case number or the full name of the party.
- By mail. Send a written request specifying the case number, document type, number of copies, and contact information. Include a check or money order for the appropriate amount.
- Online. Through the Clerk of Courts portal, you can view the docket and some documents. For e-filing and obtaining electronic copies, use the e-filing service link on the Clerk's page.
For divorce cases stored in the Probate Court or at the Records Retention Center, a separate request may be required. Older records are often stored in the Retention Center rather than the office.
According to Ohio Revised Code § 149.43, most court records are public. However, some categories — juvenile cases, sealed records, certain Domestic Relations materials — have restricted access.
